The researchers analyzed the diets of 134,000 women and 47,000 men over a period of 14 years. They see how many compounds called anthocyanins, are consumed. Anthocyanins, found in blueberry, blackcurrant, orange juice and eggplant as an antioxidant.
In this study, those who consume anthocyanins in food, have 8 percent lower risk of developing high blood pressure than those who ate the least amount of anthocyanin.
4. Beware of diet soda
Consuming a diet soda may increase the risk of stroke, a new study has found. The study, which included 2,564 participants, found that those who drank diet soda every day had a 48 percent higher risk of stroke and heart attack than those who did not drink soda at all.
Results were published after the researchers accounted for factors that might influence the risk of heart disease and stroke, such as whether or not the patient has metabolic syndrome or a history of heart disease.
5. Eating dark chocolate
A number of studies show that eating dark chocolate can reduce the risk of cardiovascular disease and stroke. A study presented last year at the American Academy of Neurology in the 62nd annual meeting found that, out of 44,000 participants, those who ate a weekly serving of chocolate is 22 percent less likely to suffer a stroke than those who did not eat chocolate.
